An enthusiastic group from diverse backgrounds came together to consider the future of Hunter Wetlands National Park at a community consultation workshop held on Sunday 25th March.

The workshop was lively and positive. The group identified a wide range of values the national park provides, including conservation, biodiversity, health, social, recreation and infrastructure. Many issues facing management of the national park were discussed, including the potential impacts of climate change, conflicting use, provision and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure, management of pests and weeds, and flood management.

Listening to the wide range of perspectives at the workshop contributed to our knowledge of the importance of the park to the community and demonstrated that there is a vast amount of knowledge and ideas out there that can help with park management. The time and energy devoted by all participants is greatly appreciated and will most certainly result in a better plan of management.

If you missed the workshop and would like to have your say, online consultation forums are open until the end of April. Registration is quick and easy and your input will contribute to a healthy and balanced future for Hunter Wetlands National Park.

A wealth of information was gleaned by the rangers for Hunter Wetlands National Park at the information session for the plan of management held on Sunday 11 March. A handful of interested people visited the National Parks and Wildlife Service office at the Hunter Wetlands Centre to chat about the park, share stories and learn about the planning process. One of our visitors was Vera Deacon, a walking history of the Hunter estuary and committed KooraGang landcare volunteer who grew up on Dempsey Island, which is now part of the Kooragang industrial area. Vera shared her story of island life and the river as part of ABC Newcastle’s River Stories. Listen to her fascinating interview here.

A stakeholder working group is being established to help set the vision for the plan of management and oversee its preparation. This group will provide an opportunity for diverse and opposing interests associated with the management of the park to listen to each other's views and discuss solutions for key management issues. It is hoped that the stakeholder working group will include representatives from the Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority, Hunter Bird Observers Club, local Aboriginal community, Newcastle City Council, Newcastle Port Corporation, commercial fishers, recreational fishers, NSW Tourism, National Parks and Wildlife Service Central Coast Hunter Range Region Advisory Committee, and the local community.
